I am most fortunate to live in the ancient parish of Dalton-in-Furness and prior to this the beautiful village of Coniston, in the Lake District. I now make a living doing the things I love – Stained Glass and Illuminated Lettering. Both mediums are on the endangered list of heritage craft skills and through my work I aim to reach out regarding these subjects through art courses on illumination including gilding techniques, commissions for stained and leaded glass restoration or original design pieces and give talks and demonstrations to local history societies.
I have a keen interest in history, literature and art and I think my skills in illuminated lettering and stained glass complement each other. With both mediums I believe “In images the illiterate read” as quoted by Pope Gregory the Great (540 – 604) and from this I hope people look a little closer and find beauty, joy and inspiration for themselves.
I have qualifications in Fine Art and Design, Life Drawing, Mathematics and English Literature. I served an 18-month stained glass apprenticeship with company ‘Charles Lightfoot 1890’ based in Manchester, 2004. I am currently mentored by Master craftsman Jim Collis for all my stained and leaded glass work and by local artists Patrick Corbett and Anne Robinson for my illuminated letting, watercolour, gilding and workshop content.
If you have any questions regarding these subjects, please get in touch; it will be a pleasure to be able to help and hopefully answer your questions!
